We, the presidents, delegates and members of the ICOMOS National Committees of the Americas, met in San
Antonio, Texas, United States of America, from the 27th to the 30th of March, 1996, at the InterAmerican
Symposium on Authenticity in the Conservation and Management of the Cultural Heritageto discuss the
meaning of authenticity in preservation in the Americas. We did so in response to the call issued by the Sec‐
retary General of ICOMOS for regional participation in the international debate on the subject.
