Rock Mechanics

Rock mechanics research in South Africa was initiated some 15 years ago to provide an understanding of the rockburst hazard which occurs in many deep-level gold mines. The effects of a typical rockburst are illustrated in Figure 1. It has been defined1 as damage to underground workings caused by the uncontrolled disruption of rock associated with a violent release of energy additional to that derived from falling rock fragments.
